Hadith Arbain Nawawi This complete translation is a yellow book application which contains a collection of 42 hadiths compiled by Imam Nawawi.
The book "Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyyah" (كتاب الأربعين النووية) is a very popular book in this country. Not only in this country, this book has also been famous throughout the Islamic world for centuries. Islamic boarding schools, dayahs, madrasas, mosques, prayer rooms, house recitations, and various Islamic educational institutions have made it a “compulsory book” to be studied. Thousands of Muslims memorize it and make it a test material for various purposes. People in our country sometimes call it briefly with the nickname "Hadith Arba'in".
The author is Imam An-Nawawi. A great scholar of the Asy-Shafi'i sect whose popularity is enough to make us not need to go to great lengths to introduce him (there are a number of my special notes regarding An-Nawawi that have been published on the www.irtaqi.net site, namely "Karomah An-Nawawi" , "How high is An-Nawawi's Arabic Language Ability?", "An-Nawawi's Productivity", and "An-Nawawi and Medical Sciences").

The book "Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyyah" is counted as a hadith book because its contents are only the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ. This book is thin and small, but great in content. The number of hadiths is "only" 40 (to be more accurate, totaling 42 traditions). Although the number of real hadiths is only 42, this book is called "Al-Arba'in" which literally means 40 and this is common in Arabic because it is classified into the language of majaz, to be precise it is included in the rule of "ithlaqul juz-i 'alal kulli".

As for the reason An-Nawawi added 2 traditions that complemented 40, that is why Ibn Hajar Al-Haitami explained in his book entitled "Al-Fathu Al-Mubin". According to Al-Haitami, An-Nawawi was amazed by the 41st hadith which contains orders against lust and orders to follow the Shari'a. The contents of this hadith are of course the "spirit" of all the previous 40 traditions. The 42nd Hadith is also admired by An-Nawawi because it contains orders for prayer, istighfar, hopes for mercy, and asks Allah for help to carry out all His commands. This kind of hadith is needed by a servant to feel light when carrying out all the Shari'a of Allah.

It is hoped that the 42 traditions written in this book are sufficient to represent and summarize all the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ because they are the core traditions. These hadiths, among which some scholars refer to them as "rubu'ut tasyri" "(a quarter of Islamic law legislation)," rubu'ud din "(a quarter of a dien), and" tsulutsud din "(a third of a deen). With hadiths like this in nature, people who are able to memorize them are expected to have mastered all the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ in their substance so that these traditions are expected to be sufficient to become the axis of Islamic teachings in facing life.
