UNICEF and Microsoft launch a "learning portal" for youth in Jordan

Amman, June 10, 2020 - UNICEF and Microsoft launched a "learning portal" for young people as a digital platform to support youth learning so that they can continue their education and develop their skills from home. This platform was launched today in Jordan in the presence of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Youth and the UNICEF representative in Jordan. They were joined remotely by 17 young people from all over the Kingdom.
The “Learning Gate” platform for young people in Jordan is the first version of the global distance learning platform in the region, which offers a comprehensive Arab curriculum, as the platform provides free access for young people and contains online and offline components and includes courses in advanced coding, software development, digital literacy and skills. Life, social entrepreneurship and the English language - plans are underway to expand and develop future learning and training opportunities.
UNICEF Representative in Jordan Tania Chapuisat stated that the “Learning Gate” offers Jordanian youth a scalable and enhanced solution to unleash their potential by developing digital and other skills they need for their future work. She added that the platform “provides a vital bridge to help hard-to-reach youth. And deprived of access to education and training, placing these youth at the center of Jordan's economic recovery.
These types of partnerships between UNICEF and other companies have the potential to bring about transformative change in the lives of children and youth based on a shared value-based approach, as social values and addressing challenges are beneficial for business as well. ”
Rola Shehab, Director General of Microsoft Jordan, said: “Our priority at Microsoft is to find ways to enable technology to improve people's lives and provide technology to those most vulnerable to failing to keep pace with the era of digital transformation. Our focus is on bridging the skills gap and making sure our solutions are effective for all. Young people to become leaders of tomorrow and open the possibility of learning through general and inclusive experiences to all students, and school closures may have devastating effects on the well-being of children and youth, but we are determined to reduce the impact of school closures on children's education by ensuring the continuity of learning for children and youth. UNICEF and the University of Cambridge in relation to the "learning portal" for youth, to provide a locally effective distance learning solution that guarantees continuous access to education for millions of young people.
Jordan is one of the countries with the highest levels of youth in the world, with 63 percent of youth under the age of thirty, but nearly a third of these young people are unemployed. In addition, the situation for girls is more difficult as Jordan has the third lowest female labor force participation rate in the world.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, UNICEF and the Ministry of Youth have increased support for youth in Jordan by providing opportunities for meaningful participation - including volunteering, cultural activities, learning, training, and entrepreneurship.

The Learning Portal for Youth started as a partnership between UNICEF, Microsoft, the University of Cambridge and its departments, the Department of Journalism and Media at the University of Cambridge and the Cambridge Department of Assessment.
