The concept of Chaos Magic (derived directly from Chaoism) is relatively recent, originating in West Yorkshire, England, in the 70s of the 20th century. Influenced by the Thelemic practices of Aleister Crowley and Austin Osman Spare, Chaos Magic is primarily a practice that encompasses several magical systems. It is one of the modern trends in the occult, built on the rejection of any form of dogmatism and the primacy of personal magical experience (which may, on the other hand, include existing systems). The Chaos Magic movement originated in the late 1970s in England, and until the 1990s it remained underground; its occurrence is associated with the growing interest in the occult among youth communities, and the subculture. The central maxim of this type of practice is "if it works, use it". Chaos Magic uses the state of Gnosis, through practices such as meditation, music, dance, use of herbs, pain, or orgasms, as a way of performing divinatory practices or other magical practices. Chaos Wizards believe they can shape reality by ascending to these states of consciousness and projecting (or reading) images or thoughts.

Although some practices are directly related to Chaos Magic - such as the use of "sigils" (see Sigil (magic)) and the use of "servers" (see Server) - this type of practice is usually based on systems of individual beliefs, and adogmatic basis. Some Chaos Magicians believe that some of these practices constitute a form of piracy paradigm (Lifehacks). Some common sources for this type of inspiration include areas such as science fiction, science theories, conspiracy theories, shamanism, oriental philosophy, religions, and individual experiences. Despite enormous variation, Chaos Wizards often work with chaotic paradigms, including humorous ones, such as Taoism's Hundun and Discordianism's Eris.
