João Ferreira Annes d'Almeida was an important personality of Portuguese Protestantism, especially known for translating the Bible into Portuguese.
Son of Catholic parents, João Almeida was born in Tavares tower location, Mangualde municipality, in Portugal. He was orphaned as a child and came to be created in Lisbon by an uncle who was a member of a religious order.
Little is known about the childhood and early adolescence of Almeida, but it is said to have received an excellent education with a view to entering the priesthood. It is not known what would have taken Almeida out of Portugal, but perhaps this was due to the strong influence exerted by the Inquisition in Portugal. She traveled to Holland and, at 14, embarked for Asia, through Batavia, on Java island, Indonesia. At that time, Batavia was the administrative center of the Dutch East India Company in Southeast Asia.
When sailing between Batavia and Malacca in Malaysia, Almeida, 14 years old, he read a Protestant pamphlet in Spanish entitled "Differences de la Cristiandad". This pamphlet attacking some of the doctrines and Catholic concepts, including the use of languages incomprehensible to the common people, such as Latin, during religious services. This caused a big effect on Almeida and, to get to Malacca, he converted to the Dutch Reformed Church in 1642, and devoted himself immediately to the translation of excerpts from the Gospels from Spanish into Portuguese.
Two years later, King James was cast in a huge project: translating the New Testament into Portuguese using as the basis of the Gospels and the New Testament Letters in Spanish translation Reina Valera, 1569. Almeida also used as sources that translation the Latin versions (Beza), French (Geneva, 1588) and Italian (Diodati, 1641). The work was completed in less than a year when Almeida was only 16 years old.
Completed in 1645, this translation was not published. But the translator made copies by hand labor, which were sent to the congregations of Malacca, Batavia and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Despite his youth, he sent a copy of the text to the Dutch governor-general in Batavia. It is believed that the copy would be sent to Amsterdam, but the person responsible for publishing the text passed away resulting in the disappearance of Almeida's work.
In 1651, when a copy of his translation you be requested to the Reformed Church on the island of Ceylon, Almeida discovered that the original had vanished. Darting back to work, from a copy or earlier drafts of their work, Almeida completed the following year a revised version of the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. In 1654, he completed the New Testament, but, again, nothing was done to print the translation, being held only a few handwritten copies.
