They are logical picture puzzles in which the grid cells must be colored or left empty according to the numbers on the side of the grid to show the hidden picture. In this type of puzzle, numbers are a form of discrete tomography that measures how many continuous lines of filled squares there are in any given row or column. For example, the key "4 8 3" will mean that there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in this order, with at least one empty square between consecutive sets.

These puzzles are colored blue. Two different colored numbers may or may not have a space between them. For example, a black four followed by a Red two may mean four black boxes, several empty spaces, and two red boxes, or it may simply mean four black boxes immediately followed by two red ones. Nonograms have no theoretical size restrictions and are not limited to square layouts.
