Javanese (Basa Jawa, Hanacaraka: ꦧꦱꦗꦮ, Pegon: باسا جاوا) is an Austronesian language which is mainly spoken by Javanese people in the central and eastern parts of Java. Javanese is also spoken by the Javanese diaspora in other parts of Indonesia, such as in Sumatra and Kalimantan; and outside Indonesia, such as in Suriname, the Netherlands and Malaysia. The total number of speakers of Javanese is estimated at around 75.5 million in 2006. As an Austronesian language of the Malay-Polynesian subgroup, Javanese is also closely related to Malay, Sundanese, Balinese and many other languages in Indonesia, although experts are still debating its position. certainly in the Malay-Polynesian family.
The history of Javanese writing dates back to the 9th century in the form of Old Javanese, which later evolved to become New Javanese around the 15th century. Initially, Javanese was written using a script system from India which was later adapted into Javanese script, although contemporary Javanese is more often written with the Latin alphabet. Javanese has the oldest literary tradition among the Austronesian languages.
Javanese nouns are generally placed before the attributes that modify them. Verbs can be divided into transitive and intransitive forms, active and passive forms, or differentiated according to their mode (indicative, irealist / subjunctive, imperative, and propositive). Javanese language recognizes the distinction between several levels of speech whose use is determined by the degree of closeness of the relationship or differences in social status between the speaker and the interlocutor or the person being talked about.
Old Javanese is the oldest Javanese language family which is spoken throughout Java, including Madura and Bali. This language is a branch of the Core Malay-Polynesian language family and is almost similar to Old Malay.
One evidence of Old Javanese writing is the "Tarumanegara inscription" in 450 AD in Java, the oldest example written entirely in Javanese is the "Sukabumi inscription" in 804 AD. This inscription is found in Pare sub-district, Kediri Regency, East Java, which is actually a copy of the original version which was around 120 years earlier, but only this copy is still in form. The content of the article tells of the formation of a pond around the irrigation canal of Śrī Hariñjing (present day Srinjing). This inscription is the last of its kind to be written in the Pallawa script, with all examples found later written in Javanese script (Hanacaraka).
Javanese is part of the Malay-Polynesian sub-group of the Austronesian language family, although its level of kinship with other Malay-Polynesian languages is difficult to determine. Using the lexicostatistic method, linguist Isidore Dyen in 1965 classified Javanese into a group he called "Javo-Sumatran Hesion", which also included Sundanese and "Melayic" languages. This group is also called "Malay-Javanese" by linguist Berndt Nothofer who for the first time attempted to reconstruct the ancestry of the languages in this hypothetical group with data that at that time was limited to only four languages (Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, and Malay). .
