Situated in the centre of Kothamangalam Taluk, St. George's Cathedral lies extended in the Varappetty, Nellikuzhi Grama Panchayats and Kothamangalam Municipality in Ernakulam District. The Episcopal ordination of Mar Mathew Pothanamuzhi, the First Bishop of the new Diocese of Kothamangalam, took place on 18th November 1956. On January 10, 1957, the inauguration of the Diocese and installation of Mar Mathew Pothanamuzhy was conducted at St. George's Church Kothamangalam, which was then declared to be Cathedral. St. George is the Heavenly patron whose Feast is celebrated on 24th April as the Parish Day.

Strength
Established in 1501, he Parish comprises of 14230 Catholics from 2254 families within a distance of 6 Kilometers. They all actively cooperate in the parish activities. While a few are of poor class, most of them are average class.

Infrastructure
There are Prayer Groups and the organization such are St. Vincent De Paul Society, Mathrudeepthi (Mothers Association), Yuvadeepthy (Catholic Youth Movement), Marian Sodality, Cherupuzhpa Mission League, Holy Childhood Units, Alter Boys Association, Church Choir, Infram (Indian Farmers Movement) which are very active in the parish with their social and cultural programmes.

Institutions Under the Parish
There is St. George's Higher Secondary School from U.P. to Higher Secondary level. There has been 100 percent pass in the SSLC and 98 percent in the Higher Secondary level last year. Moreover there are 96 sport students 46 girls and 50 boys who have won the championship in the Sub-district, district, State and National level for the last 5 years. This year they have secured 60 points with 5 new records. Out of the 6 students selected for the World School Games from Kerala, three are from St. George Higher Secondary School, Kothamangalam. Shri Raju Paul, the Physical Education teacher has won, the State, National and the Sports Council Awards for the best teacher.
