The Seismic Engineering Laboratory (LIS), attached to the Engineering Research Institute (INII) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), developed a system called MAS-LIS (Seismic Engineering Laboratory Secondary Acceleration Monitoring) that processes the information of more than 100 registration stations. With this information, the seismic intensity is calculated on the scale of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) every 5 seconds. When a strong earthquake is detected, the system immediately sends a map and a table with the value of the seismic intensity through the social network Twitter and Telegram.

This APP receives the data from the MAS-LIS. When a major earthquake occurs, the APP sends a first notification with the three sites where the intensity has been greater than 2 on the JMA scale. Then it presents a map that is updated in real time as the seismic waves propagate. Each recording station changes color according to the intensity value on the scale at the bottom of the figure. Thirty seconds after the MAS-LIS is activated, the APP sends a new notification with the maximum intensity value reached by the event.

The APP has a section called "My districts" where the user selects the sites where they would be interested in receiving information on the seismic intensity once the earthquake has concluded. In this way, a user can select the district where their home or that of their family is located and another where their workplace is located. The APP would indicate the approximate value of seismic intensity that occurred in each place.

The menu contains the following sections: "JMA scale:" This is a table that describes the effects of the different degrees of seismic intensity with their respective color according to the legend at the bottom of the map and also their Mercalli equivalence. This is divided into "Weak movement" with values from 0 to 2, "Moderate movement" with values from 3 to 4, "Strong movement" with values of "5- and 5+" and "Very strong movement" with values of 6 -, 6+ and 7. "Actions in case of Earthquake" that shows information taken from the recommendations in case of earthquake of the National Emergency Commission (CNE). They are a series of guidelines for what to do BEFORE, DURING and AFTER an emergency. "About:" which is a brief explanation of how the APP works and the type of information it displays. It also explains how to use the part of “My Districts”. "Disclaimer:" This is a note that explains that people can make use of the data provided by the APP, however, they cannot assume that it is free of errors or that cannot be modified later because it is information provided immediately. "Credits:" contains the logos of the laboratories participating in the development of this application.
