Water Related Laws in Shafi'i Schools

Shafi'i scholars generally begin the Thaharah chapter by discussing water. Considering the importance of water as a medium for jaharah which causes the validity of worship, the ulama especially the Shafi'ite scholars are very strict in this water-related regulation.

There are four types of water in relation to purification; sanctified sanctified, sacred sanctified but makruh uses it, holy but not sanctified and mutantic. The following is an explanation of each.

Holy Cleansing

Purified holy water is pure holy water and can be used to cleanse the body both from hadath or from unclean.

Absolute water

The holy and purified water is absolute water, that is pure water apart from the addition of the standard names behind it. Imam Nawawi (w 676 H) in the book of al-Majmu 'says;

"The correct definition of absolute water is water that is free from additions to the standard name" 1

The purpose of the standard name addition is that the water cannot be separated from the addition of the name behind it. For example coffee water, when water is mixed with coffee grounds, the water changes its name to coffee water, not pure water anymore. No one can call the water mixed with coffee powder as water alone, surely they call it coffee water. So this coffee water is not absolute water, because there is an additional standard name behind it.

It is different if the additional names are not standard, for example well water. Well water even though there is an additional name behind it, well, people can still refer to the water as water only.

This absolute water comes from the sky and there is from the earth, from the sky there are three; rain water, snow water and barod water, both of which have melted. Whereas there are four water from the earth; sea ​​water, river water, well water and spring water. Abu Syuja namely Syihabudin al-Asfahani (w 593 H) in his book of devotion says:

"There are seven valid water used for thaharah; rain water, sea water, river water, well water, spring water, snow water and barod water ”
