Surat Yusuf adalah satu dari sekian banyak surat-surat Makiyah.[1] surat ini meiliki 111 ayat. Nama nabi Yusuf a.s. di dalam Al-Quran diulang sebanyak 27 kali, dalam surat ini nama beliau diulang sebanyak 25 kali. Ayat-ayat dalam surat ini bertalian dan berkaitan satu sama lain dan terbagi dalam beberapa bagian yang amat menarik dan ringkas.

Surat ini menyuguhkan cerita dan jalan kehidupan nabi Yusuf a.s. dari masa belia sampai akhirnya beliau menempati posisi penting sebagai pemegang gudang harta negeri Mesir. Di samping itu surat ini menjelaskan permasalahan iffah, kesucian, dan kekalahan semua konspirasi yang dialamatkan kepada beliau, serta penjelasan manifestasi kuasa tuhan.

Cerita nabi Yusuf a.s. hanya terdapat dalam surat ini saja. Berbeda dengan cerita nabi-nabi Allah SWT yang lain, di mana cerita mereka terdapat dalam berbagai surat. Cerita nabi Adam a.s. dan Nuh a.s. misalnya disebutkan dalam 12 surat. Cerita nabi Ibrahim a.s. terdapat dalam 18 surat. Cerita nabi Soleh a.s. dalam 11 surat, nabi Dawud a.s. dalam 5 surat, nabi Hud a.s. dan Sulaiman dalam 4 surat dan cerita nabi Isa a.s. dan Zakaria a.s. masing-masing terdapat dalam 3 surat.

Cerita nabi Yusuf a.s. juga termaktub dalam kitab Taurat sifr fidoyesy (kitab kejadian) dari halaman 37-50, hanya saja, jika dibandingkan cerita nabi Yusuf a.s. yang tertera di dalam Al-Quran dengan dongeng tentang beliau yang terdapat dalam kitab Taurat, akan tampak jelas dan gamblang akan keotentikan Al-Quran dan tahrif Taurat.

Lebih dari itu, cerita Yusuf a.s. dan Zulaikha juga tertera dalam buku-buku sastra sebagaimana telah dilakukan oleh Firdausi, seorang penyair terkenal berdarah Parsia.

Al-Quran dalam menceritakan kisah Nabi Yusuf a.s. lebih menitik beratkan kepada kepribadian beliau saat melewati berbagai tantangan-tantangan yang menghadang, sedang cerita nabi-nabi yang lain, Al-Quran lebih banyak memberikan perhatian pada nasib naas yang dialami oleh para pembangkang, serta keengganan dan kebinasaan mereka.

Dalam beberapa riwayat disebutkan, bahwa kalangan hawa baik ibu-ibu maupun remaja putri tidak diperkenankan mempelajari dan menelaahi surat Yusuf a.s., hanya saja menurut beberapa ulama, riwayat-riwayat yang memuat pelarangan tersebut tidak dapat diterima kebenarannya, di samping itu merujuk kepada dalil dan sandaran pelarangan itu, akan jelas bahwa pelarangan itu tidak dapat dibenarkan, karena pemaparan rasa cinta dan kasih Zulaikha, istri pemuka kerajaan Mesir, sesuai ungkapan Al-Quran terkesan bukan hal yang negatif dan tercela.
